PARIS, 26 May 2016 — Lady Monika Bacardi attended the opening of “David Bowie Unseen by Markus Klinko” at Galerie ArtCube in Paris, joining distinguished guests for an evening honoring the legendary British artist. The exhibition, held in partnership with PHOTO Management and Fujifilm, marked a poignant tribute to David Bowie, who had passed away on 10 January 2016.
The vernissage brought together international figures from the worlds of art, music, and culture at the gallery’s elegant space on Place de Furstemberg in Paris’s 6th arrondissement. Photographer Markus Klinko attended the opening, presenting his intimate body of work created during his collaboration with Bowie in the early 2000s.
Lady Monika Bacardi’s presence at this cultural gathering reflected her ongoing commitment to supporting significant artistic initiatives that celebrate creative excellence. Her attendance underscored her dedication to honoring visionary artists whose work continues to shape contemporary culture.
The exhibition featured approximately twenty iconic photographs of David Bowie taken by Markus Klinko during their artistic collaboration that began in 2001. Their partnership commenced when Klinko photographed Bowie’s wife, Iman, for her book “I Am Iman.” This initial meeting led to a fifteen-year friendship and creative collaboration between the photographer and the musician.
Klinko’s most renowned images of Bowie emerged from two landmark photography sessions. The first produced the cover for Bowie’s 2002 album “Heathen,” featuring black-and-white portraits that captured the artist’s distinctive presence with cinematic sophistication. The second session created Bowie’s cover for GQ’s “Men of the Year” issue, including the striking image of the rock icon posed fearlessly with wolves.
Following Bowie’s passing, Klinko decided to bring these previously unseen images to audiences worldwide. The Paris exhibition at Galerie ArtCube represented one of the early presentations of this collection, following previous showings in Miami and Basel. The photographer’s decision to create large-format prints and share these archived images provided admirers with a rare glimpse into Bowie’s creative spirit during one of his most artistically productive periods.
The exhibition ran from 26 May through 25 June 2016, offering visitors an opportunity to experience Klinko’s perspective on Bowie’s enduring artistic legacy. The collection demonstrated the photographer’s ability to capture not merely the performer’s public persona but also the thoughtful artist who approached image-making with the same creative intensity he brought to his music.
Lady Monika Bacardi’s participation in this cultural event exemplified her role as a patron of the arts who recognizes and celebrates artistic achievements that transcend conventional boundaries. Her presence at the vernissage contributed to an evening that united appreciation for visual artistry with reverence for one of popular culture’s most transformative figures.
