MONTE CARLO, 30 November 2019 — Lady Monika Bacardi attended the inaugural European Golden Pawn Awards ceremony at the prestigious Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo. The distinguished evening brought together international figures from the world of chess to celebrate European legends and their achievements in this intellectual and strategic game.
Established by the European Chess Union Board, the European Golden Pawn awards ceremony represents the beginning of an annual tradition held on the last Saturday of November in Monaco. The first edition honored European chess legends who have left an indelible mark on the game, recognizing excellence across multiple categories from journalism and organization to legendary players who have shaped the sport.
Lady Monika Bacardi, renowned for her commitment to supporting cultural and intellectual pursuits within Monaco society, joined prominent guests for an evening that celebrated chess as both sport and art. The ceremony featured hosts Jamaican-American chess Grandmaster Maurice Ashley and Georgian television presenter and singer Helen Kalandadze, who guided guests through the presentations.
The evening’s program included special recognition for twelve individuals who have significantly contributed to European chess. Among the distinguished honorees were legendary chess champion Garry Kasparov, who received the European Chess Legend award for male players, and Judit Polgar, recognized as European Chess Legend for female players. Additional awards celebrated achievements in chess literature, film, journalism, organization, and development.
Beyond the main ceremony and gala dinner, the European Golden Pawn comprised compelling side events that showcased the enduring appeal of chess across generations. Chess legend Garry Kasparov participated in a simultaneous chess exhibition with fifteen young players, demonstrating the game’s capacity to bridge experience and emerging talent. The evening also featured a blitz game between Kasparov and lifetime achievement winner Nona Gaprindashvili, creating a memorable moment where chess history and contemporary excellence converged.
The ceremony included performances by Nikoloz Rachveli, composer of the European Chess Union anthem and director of the Georgian National Philharmonic Orchestra, who provided musical entertainment that honored Monte Carlo’s historic connection to chess championships. The cultural program reflected the sophisticated atmosphere befitting Monaco’s tradition of hosting distinguished international gatherings.
The event was attended by Joel Bouzou, adviser to H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco and President of Peace and Sport, alongside European Chess Union President Zurab Azmaiparashvili, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich, and representatives from chess federations and business communities across Europe. The gathering demonstrated Monaco’s continued role as a cultural crossroads where intellectual pursuits and international cooperation flourish.
The Golden Pawn trophy itself, designed by Georgian industrial designer Zviad Tsikolia, symbolizes aspiration and achievement. The pawn represents the only chess piece that can transform into any desired piece through promotion, embodying the pursuit of one’s highest potential.
Lady Monika Bacardi’s presence at this inaugural ceremony reflected her broader commitment to supporting initiatives that celebrate intellectual excellence and cultural heritage within Monaco’s distinguished society.
