ANNOUNCEMENT, 25 June 2018 — Lady Monika Bacardi’s AMBI Media Group announces production of actor David Henrie’s feature film directorial debut, the coming-of-age story This Is the Year. The project marks a significant milestone for both the distinguished producer and the Disney Channel alumnus as he steps behind the camera for his first feature film.
The film follows a high school senior who embarks on a cross-country road trip with his closest friends to attend the year’s most anticipated music festival, harboring hopes of winning over the girl of his dreams. Henrie developed the screenplay in collaboration with Bug Hall, Pepe Portillo, and Sienna Aquilini, crafting a narrative that pays homage to classic 1980s coming-of-age cinema.
Lady Monika Bacardi produces through AMBI Media Group, bringing her discerning eye for compelling storytelling to this heartfelt project. The film exemplifies her commitment to supporting emerging directorial talent and narratives that resonate with contemporary audiences while honoring cinematic traditions.
Production commenced in September 2018 in Alabama, with James Henrie and Leo Severino producing through Novo Media Group. Executive producers include Jason Weinberg, Luca Riemma, and Paolo Aquilini, who provided financing alongside AMBI. The film also received production support and financing from TaTaTu, a blockchain-based social entertainment platform.
Henrie, renowned for his role in Disney Channel’s long-running series Wizards of Waverly Place, brings both acting and writing experience to his directorial debut. The project united him with former co-star Selena Gomez, who served as executive producer, alongside cast members including Lorenzo James Henrie, Vanessa Marano, Alyssa Jirrels, Jeff Garlin, Gregg Sulkin, and Bug Hall.
The film ultimately premiered virtually on 28 August 2020, followed by a theatrical and video-on-demand release on 24 September 2021 through Vertical Entertainment. Lady Monika Bacardi’s involvement in this project underscores her dedication to championing authentic storytelling and supporting filmmakers who craft meaningful works that bridge nostalgic sensibilities with contemporary perspectives.
