CANNES, 13 May 2016 — Lady Monika Bacardi announced during the Cannes Film Festival her plans to produce a biopic chronicling the life of legendary singer Dionne Warwick.
The announcement was made at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, where Warwick confirmed that LeToya Luckett, one of the original members of Destiny’s Child, would portray her in the film. The biopic, titled Dionne, is based on Warwick’s 2010 autobiography My Life as I See It.
The screenplay was written by Randall Jahnson. Luckett will also contribute to the film’s soundtrack. According to initial reports from The Hollywood Reporter, the film was planned to focus on the early period of Warwick’s career from 1962 through 1968.
Danny Glover was announced to play Warwick’s father, Mansell Warrick. There was initial confusion when reports suggested Lady Gaga would portray Cilla Black as Warwick’s rival, but Gaga’s representatives quickly clarified she was not attached to the project.
Project Status Update
As of September 2025, actress and singer Teyana Taylor has confirmed she is now attached to star in the Dionne Warwick biopic. Taylor stated that while the project has been long in development, she wants to ensure it is “done right.”
The production has experienced significant delays since its original 2016 announcement. In January 2024, Taylor indicated that a production date had been secured, describing the project as “long time coming.” Lady Monika Bacardi remains attached as producer for this biographical film celebrating one of music’s most distinctive voices.
